Building a Hungary-ready receipt workflow

Match the document to the sale

Use a Hungary receipt template when you need a clear payment record for goods or services sold in Hungary. For VAT-taxable supplies, Hungarian VAT-taxable persons must ensure that an invoice is issued unless a specific Act CXXVII of 2007 on VAT exemption allows another document or receipt treatment. The template should help you avoid treating every paid transaction as a simple cash receipt.

A practical template gives you a structured record for the supplier, customer, payment date, item description, amount paid, VAT treatment, and currency. It should also leave room for the issue date and supply date when they differ. That matters because Hungarian invoices are generally issued immediately when consideration or an advance is paid by completion, within 8 days for other VAT-charged supplies, or by the 15th day of the following month for specified intra-Community exempt supplies and reverse-charge services.

Include the fields tax reviewers expect

A Hungary receipt that supports VAT records should identify the supplier with full name, address, and tax number. It should also capture the customer's full name and address, plus the customer's tax number in reverse-charge, intra-Community, or domestic taxable-customer cases specified by the VAT Act. Add a unique sequential number when the document functions as an invoice, since Hungarian invoicing software must allocate consecutive serial numbers without omission or repetition.

Line items need more than a plain description and total. Add the goods or service name, measurable quantity, supply or advance date when different from the issue date, taxable amount, unit price excluding tax, discounts outside the unit price, applied tax rate, output VAT amount, and exemption reference where applicable. Hungary uses VAT, not sales tax, with a 27% general VAT rate and 0%, 5%, and 18% rates only for goods and services listed in the VAT Act.

Handle Hungary-specific receipt details

Domestic VAT invoices must show output VAT payable in HUF, even when the commercial price or other invoice details use another currency. A template can still include foreign-currency totals for the buyer, but the HUF VAT figure belongs on the tax record. Hungary allows invoices in Hungarian or any spoken foreign language, and the tax authority can require an official Hungarian translation during an audit.

Online invoice reporting also affects the workflow. Hungarian invoicing software must support online data disclosure to NTCA for invoices within the VAT Act scope. Software-issued invoice data is reported immediately through a machine-to-machine connection. Printed-form invoices are reported within 4 days, or within 1 day when invoice VAT reaches or exceeds HUF 500,000. A receipt template should keep reporting-relevant fields complete before the record is finalized.

Use templates for one-off receipts

A free template is enough for a single paid transaction, a low-volume sale, or a manual record that does not need recurring client billing. It helps you gather the right fields, describe the sale clearly, and create a document the buyer can match against payment. Electronic invoices also need the recipient's consent in Hungary, and EDI-based electronic invoicing requires a prior written agreement.

A managed workflow fits better when time, rates, and expenses feed repeated billing. Everhour separates internal cost rates from client-facing billable rates, supports per-person defaults and per-project overrides, preserves dated rate history, and can price work by project, member, or task. That structure keeps the receipt or invoice amount tied to the way the work was actually billed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a Hungary receipt replace a VAT invoice?

A Hungary receipt does not automatically replace a VAT invoice. For VAT-taxable supplies made in Hungary for consideration, Hungarian VAT-taxable persons must ensure that an invoice is issued unless a VAT Act exemption allows another document or receipt treatment. Use the receipt format only when it matches the transaction category.

Which VAT rate should a Hungary receipt show?

Show the VAT rate that applies to the goods or services under Act CXXVII of 2007 on VAT. Hungary's general VAT rate is 27% of the taxable amount. The 0%, 5%, and 18% rates apply only to listed goods and services, and exemptions apply to specified public-interest or special-nature activities.

Can a Hungary receipt use euros?

A Hungary receipt can show commercial amounts in euros when the parties use that currency, but a domestic VAT invoice must show output VAT payable in HUF. Keep the HUF VAT amount visible on the document so the tax record matches Hungary's currency rule.

Which numbering mistake causes problems in Hungary?

Skipped, repeated, or unclear numbering causes problems when a receipt functions as a VAT invoice. A Hungarian VAT invoice needs a sequential number that uniquely identifies it, and invoicing software must allocate consecutive serial numbers without omission or repetition. Manual templates need the same discipline.

Can a Hungary receipt be electronic?

A Hungary receipt or invoice can be paper-based or electronic when the legal conditions are met. Electronic invoicing requires the recipient's consent, and EDI-based electronic invoicing requires a prior written agreement between the parties. Keep consent separate from the template fields so the delivery method is documented.

How does Everhour keep rates accurate for Hungary client billing?

Everhour separates cost rates from billable rates, with per-person defaults and per-project overrides. Teams can preserve dated rate history and price billable work by project, member, or task, so a client receipt or invoice reflects the rate structure used for the work.

How does Everhour support invoice preparation after time is tracked?

Everhour Billing & Invoicing turns tracked billable time and expenses into client invoices. Users can select uninvoiced time and expenses, preview the breakdown, and generate an invoice while excluding non-billable work from the client-facing amount.

Turn billable work into receipts

Track rates, dates, and billable work before the document stage. Everhour keeps project pricing and dated rate history connected to client billing, improving invoice accuracy.
