Sales and use tax in the United States depends on state and local rules, nexus, product or service taxability, and the place of sale. There is no single national sales-tax rate. Washington, for example, has a 6.5% state portion plus a local portion that varies by city or county and is collected based on where the customer receives the goods or services.
Service taxability also changes by state and service type. California generally taxes retail sales of tangible personal property and only some service or labor charges, while Texas defines 16 broad categories of taxable services. Entrepreneurs should avoid treating every invoice as taxable by default. The tax line should reflect the sale, the buyer location, and the seller's registration duties, including any state seller permit or sales-tax account where required.
