A Sweden hourly-rate calculation answers one practical question: the SEK per hour you need to charge before VAT so your billable work covers income, contributions, overhead, and unpaid working time. Swedish consultant marketplaces commonly publish rates as hourly prices in SEK, so keeping the output in SEK makes the result easy to compare with local quotes and client expectations.
The calculation also separates your bill rate from VAT collected for the state. Sweden's standard VAT rate is 25% for most goods and services, while reduced 12% and 6% rates and exemptions apply to specified categories. A client invoice can show the pre-VAT hourly rate, VAT, and total, but the pre-VAT rate is the number that funds the business.
Start with the annual amount the work must fund, then divide it by realistic billable hours. For a sole trader, include the 2026 self-employed social security contribution rate of 28.97% on active business income for a person born in 1959 or later, before applicable standard deductions and reductions. Add recurring overhead such as accounting, banking, insurance, software, workspace, and unpaid admin time.
For example, a consultant targeting SEK 600,000 of active business income, adding SEK 173,820 for 28.97% self-employed contributions, and budgeting SEK 100,980 for overhead needs SEK 874,800 before VAT. With 1,200 billable hours, the required pre-VAT rate is SEK 729.00 per hour. Adding 25% VAT puts the invoice line at SEK 911.25 per hour for a VAT-taxable Swedish customer.
A calculated rate needs a market check before you quote it. Consultant.dev reports a Swedish IT consultant market median of 919-1,049 SEK/hour, with a mean of 1,132 SEK/hour, based on rate-bearing active listings from more than 30,000 assignments as of Q1 2026. Brainville's Sweden statistics for January-June 2025 list supplier hourly rates of 843 SEK/hour for .NET, 852 SEK/hour for backend, and 845 SEK/hour for DevOps.
Those benchmarks do not replace your calculation. They show whether your rate sits inside a credible range for the role, seniority, and client type. A sole trader with low overhead can still need a higher rate if billable hours are limited. A day-rate contract also converts back into hourly math by dividing the day price by the expected paid working hours.
A one-off calculation is enough when you need a quote check, a renewal number, or a comparison between hourly and day-rate pricing. It stops being enough when projects use different client rates, member rates, task rates, or dates. Sweden also has tax-wrapper differences: F-tax approval means the sole trader handles preliminary tax and individual social security contributions, while a private limited company starts with SEK 25,000 share capital and registration fees.
Everhour separates internal cost rates from client-facing billable rates, with per-person defaults and per-project overrides. Rate changes can be dated, so older reports keep their original calculations while new work uses the updated rate. That matters when a Swedish consultant changes pricing mid-year, applies a different project rate, or compares labor cost against billed revenue.

Quote the working rate before VAT, then show VAT separately on the invoice when Swedish VAT applies. The standard Swedish VAT rate is 25% for most goods and services, with reduced rates and exemptions for specified categories. The pre-VAT rate funds income, overhead, and contributions; VAT collected from the client is reported separately.
A sole trader with F-tax approval handles preliminary tax and individual social security contributions. FA-tax applies when the sole trader also has employment income. A private limited company uses a different payroll and company structure, and Business Sweden lists SEK 25,000 minimum share capital plus Bolagsverket registration fees of SEK 1,900 electronically or SEK 2,200 on paper.
A business must register for Swedish VAT when it continuously sells VAT-taxable goods or services and annual turnover exceeds SEK 120,000 in the current calendar year. Cross-border EU service activity can trigger VAT registration even below that level. The rate calculation should keep VAT outside the pre-VAT bill rate either way.
A Swedish business usually does not charge Swedish VAT when selling goods or services to a business in another EU country. The buyer reports VAT in the other EU country, the seller checks the buyer's VAT number, and VAT-registered sellers report qualifying sales in a periodic statement. The pre-VAT hourly rate still needs to cover the Swedish business cost base.
The common mistake is dividing desired annual income by total working hours instead of billable hours. Admin, sales, proposals, training, unpaid client calls, vacation, and sick time reduce billable capacity. A consultant who works 1,800 hours but bills 1,200 hours must recover the full annual cost from 1,200 client-paid hours.
Everhour separates internal cost rates from client-facing billable rates, so reports can calculate labor cost, revenue, and profit. Teams can set per-person defaults, use per-project overrides, date rate changes, and price billable work by project, member, or custom task rate.
Set cost rates, billable rates, dated changes, and project overrides in Everhour, then compare tracked time against revenue and profit without rebuilding rate sheets manually.
