This calculation answers the rate you need to charge per billable hour in Bangladesh after you account for target income, overhead, platform fees, voluntary benefit substitutes, applicable tax treatment, and realistic billable hours. Use BDT unless the client contract prices the work in USD or another foreign currency. The output is a billing rate, not an employee wage.
For Bangladesh freelancers, the same annual income can produce very different hourly rates. A freelancer with 1,000 billable hours needs a higher rate than someone with 1,500 billable hours. Upwork supports hourly and fixed-price contracts, and Fiverr states that for seller coupon orders, the seller receives 80% of the purchase amount after platform deduction, so platform choice changes the gross rate you need to quote.
Start with the income you want to keep, then add annual business overhead and self-funded benefits. Bangladesh's Universal Pension Surakkha scheme gives self-employed citizens monthly contribution options of BDT 1,000, 2,000, 3,000, and 5,000, so include the annual contribution if you treat it as part of your compensation target.
Example: you want BDT 1,140,000 in annual personal income, expect BDT 150,000 in software, internet, equipment, and admin costs, and choose BDT 60,000 per year for Surakkha contributions. Your net requirement is BDT 1,350,000. If a platform fee takes 10% and you expect 1,000 billable hours, you need BDT 1,500,000 in gross client revenue, or BDT 1,500 per billable hour.
Bangladesh residents are taxed on worldwide income under the Income Tax Act, while non-residents are taxed on Bangladesh-source or Bangladesh-received income. For assessment years 2026-27 and 2027-28, the general individual threshold is Tk 375,000, followed by progressive slabs of 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, and 30%. A rate calculation should treat tax as a real cash requirement unless a specific exemption applies.
The major Bangladesh-specific edge case is the July 1, 2024-June 30, 2027 exemption for income from listed technology businesses, including IT freelancing, software development, web services, digital graphics design, data processing, and related services, if income, expenditure, and investment are wholly through bank transfer. Exported services from Bangladesh are zero-rated for VAT, while domestic VAT registration generally applies once turnover exceeds BDT 5 million.
An hourly rate still helps when the client wants a fixed project or milestone price. Estimate the billable hours, multiply by the required hourly rate, then add any direct pass-through costs. A 40-hour milestone at BDT 1,500 per hour should price at BDT 60,000 before any separately billed costs, scope buffer, or tax handling required by the contract.
For one proposal or a quick platform quote, a one-off calculation is enough. For recurring client work, retainers, and mixed hourly and fixed-fee projects, use a managed workflow that tracks billable time, compares it with money budgets, and flags overages before the invoice is due. Everhour supports hour-based and money-based project budgets, recurring budget periods, threshold alerts, and budget protection.

Use BDT for your internal calculation because your income goal, overhead, pension contribution, and local tax position are usually in Bangladeshi taka. Quote in USD only when the client contract, marketplace, or payment terms require it. Keep the exchange-rate assumption separate from the hourly rate so you can update it without rebuilding the whole calculation.
Billable hours are hours you can charge to a client under the contract. Proposal writing, unpaid revisions, learning time, bookkeeping, platform profile work, and idle time usually reduce the billable-hour base. If you expect 40 working hours per week but only 25 are chargeable, build the rate on the 25 billable hours, not the full workweek.
Platform fees increase the gross client rate because the amount you receive is lower than the amount the client pays. Upwork's freelancer service fee is contract-specific at 0%-15%, while Fiverr states seller coupon orders leave the seller with 80% of the purchase amount after platform deduction. Add the fee load before dividing by billable hours.
No. The Bangladesh exemption applies for July 1, 2024-June 30, 2027 to listed technology businesses, including IT freelancing and related services, only if the business's income, expenditure, and investment are wholly through bank transfer. Work outside the listed categories, mixed payment flows, or nonqualifying records need separate tax treatment.
Yes. A fixed-price project needs an internal hourly rate so you can test whether the milestone price covers the time required. Multiply estimated billable hours by your required hourly rate, then compare that number with the proposed project fee. A low fixed fee becomes visible when the implied hourly rate falls below your required rate.
Everhour Project Budgeting lets teams set hour-based or money-based budgets, use one-time or recurring budget periods, and receive threshold alerts at 75%, 90%, and 100% or custom levels. Budget protection can stop timers and prevent extra logging after a project exceeds its limit, which keeps billable work tied to the approved rate plan.
Everhour Billing & Invoicing converts tracked billable time and expenses into invoices, using project or member rates while excluding non-billable work. Invoice data can be grouped by project, task, person, date, or another available breakdown, then exported to QuickBooks Online, Xero, or FreshBooks as drafts.
Set the Bangladesh hourly rate once, then track time against money budgets as work happens. Everhour keeps recurring client budgets visible and protects margins before billing slips.
