How Bangladesh overtime pay is calculated

What this calculation answers

This calculation answers how much overtime allowance is due when an adult worker in Bangladesh works beyond the ordinary schedule. The core thresholds are 8 hours per day and 48 hours per week. With overtime, total working time may exceed 48 hours, but it must not exceed 60 hours in any week or average more than 56 hours per week over a year, unless a government sector exemption applies.

The result matters for payroll checks, wage disputes, internal approvals, and manager reviews before a pay period closes. It also helps separate ordinary overtime from special cases. Workers employed in road transport establishments have a separate 150 additional working hours per year cap, and piece-rate workers are excluded from the statutory double-rate overtime allowance under section 108(1).

Use the correct wage base

Bangladesh overtime is paid at twice the ordinary rate of basic wage plus dearness allowance and any ad hoc or interim wage. That means the calculation does not start from every payroll item unless that item belongs in the statutory wage base. For a monthly-paid worker, Bangladesh Labour Rules use a 208-hour divisor to convert that monthly wage base into an hourly overtime base.

Daily-paid and weekly-paid workers use different divisors before the same 2x multiplier is applied. For daily-paid workers, the hourly overtime base is 1/8 of the daily wage. For weekly-paid workers, the hourly overtime base is 1/48 of the weekly wage. Using the wrong divisor is a direct payroll error because it changes the hourly base before overtime is multiplied.

Apply the formula step by step

For a monthly-paid worker, use this formula: monthly basic wage plus dearness allowance plus ad hoc or interim allowance ÷ 208 × 2 × overtime hours. For example, if the included monthly wage base is Tk 31,200 and the worker has 14 overtime hours, the hourly base is Tk 150. The overtime rate is Tk 300, so the overtime allowance is Tk 4,200.

The same structure works for other pay bases after you change the divisor. A daily-paid worker's daily wage is divided by 8 before multiplying by 2 and by overtime hours. A weekly-paid worker's weekly wage is divided by 48 before multiplying by 2 and by overtime hours. Do not treat festival-holiday work as ordinary overtime because it has a separate rule.

Know when holidays change the result

Bangladesh gives every worker 11 paid festival holidays per calendar year. If a worker works on a festival holiday, the treatment is separate from ordinary overtime: the worker receives one substitute holiday plus two days of compensatory wages. That is not the same as simply adding festival-holiday hours to the weekly overtime total.

This distinction matters when payroll has both extra weekday hours and festival-holiday work in the same period. Calculate ordinary overtime from the applicable wage base and overtime hours first. Then handle festival-holiday work under its own substitute-day and compensatory-wage rule. Mixing the two produces a number that looks precise but does not match the listed statutory treatment.

When a calculator is enough vs a managed workflow

A calculator is enough when you need a one-off payroll check: the wage base is known, the overtime hours are already approved, and there is no festival-holiday, road transport, piece-rate, or annual-average issue to review. It is also enough for a quick comparison between a manual payroll sheet and the 208-hour divisor method for monthly-paid workers.

A managed workflow is needed when overtime starts in time records, moves through manager approval, and then becomes payroll data. Everhour timecards support payroll review with daily, weekly, and monthly work-hour totals, project-vs-working-hour comparisons, Team Hours reporting, and exports, so approved hours can be reviewed before the final overtime calculation is handed off.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is monthly overtime pay calculated in Bangladesh?

For a monthly-paid worker, divide monthly basic wage plus dearness allowance and any ad hoc or interim allowance by 208 to get the hourly overtime base. Then multiply that hourly base by 2 and by the number of overtime hours. The 2x multiplier applies to the statutory wage base, not automatically to every payroll component.

What weekly limit applies when overtime is included?

Adult workers in Bangladesh ordinarily may not be required to work more than 48 hours in a week. With overtime, total working time may exceed 48 hours but must not exceed 60 hours in any week or average more than 56 hours per week over a year, unless a government sector exemption applies.

Does the 2x overtime allowance apply to piece-rate workers?

No. The statutory double-rate overtime allowance under section 108(1) does not apply to piece-rate workers. Do not force piece-rate work into the same formula used for monthly-paid, daily-paid, or weekly-paid workers unless a separate policy, contract, or applicable rule creates a specific payment method.

What is the common mistake with the 208-hour divisor?

The common mistake is dividing the full monthly gross pay by 208 instead of dividing only monthly basic wage plus dearness allowance and any ad hoc or interim allowance. Another error is dividing by actual monthly calendar hours. Bangladesh Labour Rules use 208 hours/month for monthly-paid workers in this overtime calculation.

How should festival-holiday work be treated?

Festival-holiday work is treated separately from ordinary overtime. Every worker is entitled to 11 paid festival holidays per calendar year. If the worker works on a festival holiday, the worker receives one substitute holiday plus two days of compensatory wages. Do not replace that rule with a standard overtime-only calculation.

How does Everhour support payroll review for Bangladesh overtime?

Everhour timecards show daily, weekly, and monthly work-hour totals, which gives managers a clear review point before overtime is calculated. Team Hours reporting, project-vs-working-hour comparisons, and exports help keep approved time records organized for payroll checks.

Can Everhour show overtime hours in reports?

Everhour Reporting can surface overtime and double-overtime data in Team Hours and configurable reports when overtime tracking is enabled. Reports can be filtered, grouped, exported, or scheduled, giving payroll and operations teams a repeatable view of overtime records.

Review overtime before payroll

Use approved timecards, Team Hours reporting, and exports before running payroll calculations. Everhour keeps work-hour records organized so Bangladesh overtime checks start from reviewed time.
