Tracking ClickUp time for budgets and billing

Decide where time should land

Teams that manage work in ClickUp need tracked hours to support client billing, internal budgets, or project reporting. The central decision is where the time record should live after someone starts a timer on a ClickUp task. Clockify records the entry in Clockify. Everhour records the entry in Everhour. ClickUp supplies the task context, while the connected time tool stores entries in its own reporting layer.

That distinction matters when managers review hours, rates, project spend, and invoice inputs. A timer inside a ClickUp task reduces context switching, but the reporting destination determines which system holds the audit trail. If a team only needs a running timer and basic reports, the Clockify workflow can cover that job. If the team needs ClickUp task time connected to billable rates, fee budgets, alerts, and invoicing, the workflow needs a broader time and budget layer.

Follow the task timer path

Clockify adds a timer button inside ClickUp tasks through its browser extension. The timer can use the ClickUp task name, and time can be stopped from Clockify's browser, mobile, or desktop apps. ClickUp's help page describes the integration as Chrome-extension based, while Clockify's own ClickUp page lists Chrome, Firefox, and Microsoft Edge extensions.

Clockify can connect ClickUp context to Clockify records. If a Clockify project matches the ClickUp folder, the extension can auto-select it. With extension settings enabled, ClickUp information can also create projects, tasks, and tags in Clockify. The tracked entry can include a description, project or task, billable status, tags, and timer or manual time data. The tracked time does not sync back into ClickUp's native time records.

Compare rates and budget controls

Clockify's Free plan is $0 for up to 5 users and includes unlimited tracking, timesheets, mobile and desktop apps, tracking integrations, team activity, and reports. Paid annual per-seat monthly prices as of July 23, 2026 are Basic $3.99, Standard $5.49, Pro $7.99, and Enterprise $11.99. Billable hourly rates for users and projects start on Basic, task-specific hourly rates start on Standard, and budget estimates with alerts start on Pro.

On Pro or Enterprise, Clockify project budgets can use an overall manual money budget or task-based budgets. The project status tab compares billable entry amounts against the budget and shows spent and remaining amounts. Alerts can be configured at chosen estimate percentages and recipients, then generated at the 30-minute mark of each hour. Clockify states that estimates are informational, so they do not automatically stop tracking after a budget or estimate is used up.

Choose a durable billing workflow

A one-off ClickUp task timer is enough when the team only needs to capture time, review Clockify reports, and keep budget checks inside Clockify. That setup fits small teams that do not need tracked ClickUp task time to become a controlled billing workflow with project rates, member exceptions, invoice-ready totals, and budget enforcement.

A managed workflow becomes necessary when tracked time must feed billing and budget decisions every week. Everhour's ClickUp integration uses the browser extension, syncs ClickUp folders, projects, tasks, tags, and custom fields into Everhour, and adds controls for timers, estimates, budgets, timesheets, and billable project setup. Everhour can track hour or fee budgets, send alerts at thresholds such as 75%, 90%, and 100%, and auto-stop timers when a budget is exceeded.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Clockify tracked time appear in ClickUp reports?

No. Time started from ClickUp through Clockify is recorded in Clockify only and does not upload tracked time back into ClickUp. Use Clockify reports for those entries, because ClickUp's native time reporting does not receive that tracked time from the Clockify integration.

Which browser do I need for the Clockify ClickUp timer?

ClickUp's help page says the Clockify integration works in Google Chrome and requires the Clockify Chrome extension. Clockify's own ClickUp page offers browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox, and Microsoft Edge. Check the extension source your team plans to use before rolling the timer out.

Can Clockify create projects and tags from ClickUp work?

Yes, when extension settings allow it. If a Clockify project matches the ClickUp folder, the extension can auto-select that project. It can also create Clockify projects, tasks, and tags from ClickUp information, which reduces setup work when ClickUp already holds the project structure.

Which Clockify plan includes budget estimates and alerts?

Clockify lists budget estimates and alerts on Pro and Enterprise. Time estimates start on Basic and higher, billable hourly rates for users and projects start on Basic, and task-specific hourly rates start on Standard. Budget tracking in Clockify is separate from ClickUp's native time records.

What mistake causes ClickUp budget reports to miss Clockify time?

Teams often assume a timer inside a ClickUp task writes time back to ClickUp. Clockify's ClickUp integration does not do that. The entry stays in Clockify, so budget review must use Clockify's project status and reports unless the team tracks time through another connected layer.

How does Everhour handle billable and non-billable ClickUp time?

Everhour supports billable and non-billable time through project billing status, task-level non-billable controls, custom task rates, and member-rate exceptions. Admin reports can show billable time, non-billable time, billable amount, and cost by member or task.

How does Everhour connect ClickUp time to budgets?

Everhour syncs ClickUp folders, projects, tasks, tags, and custom fields into Everhour, then adds ClickUp controls for timers, estimates, budgets, and timesheets. Project budgets can be tracked in hours or fees, with budget alerts and timer auto-stop when the budget is exceeded.

Track ClickUp time for billing
