Managing work hours under Turkish rules

Purpose for Turkey teams

A Turkey-focused time tracking setup helps you capture daily work, rest breaks, project time, and weekly totals before payroll, client billing, or management reporting uses the data. Turkish Labour Law No. 4857 sets a general 45-hour weekly working-time cap unless the employment contract sets a lower weekly schedule, so weekly summaries need more than a simple start and stop total.

The practical goal is a record that payroll, HR, finance, and project managers can read without rebuilding the week from messages or calendar notes. A good entry shows the date, worker, project or cost center, start and end times, breaks, worked hours, and approval status. For client work, it should also preserve billable status and Turkish lira amounts shown with TL or ₺.

Records a time app should keep

Turkey distinguishes ordinary hours, extra-hours work, and overtime. Work above an agreed schedule but up to 45 hours in a week is extra-hours work with a 25% premium. Work exceeding 45 hours in a week is overtime and is paid at the employee's hourly rate plus 50%. The annual overtime amount for an employee may not exceed 270 hours.

Daily structure matters as much as the weekly total. If working time is distributed unevenly across workdays, daily working time may not exceed 11 hours. Minimum rest breaks are 15 minutes for work of 4 hours or less, 30 minutes for work over 4 and up to 7.5 hours, and 1 hour for work over 7.5 hours. Your record should make those break periods visible.

Turkey-specific setup decisions that matter

Language, currency, and privacy controls decide whether the system fits local work. Turkey's official state language is Turkish, and local payroll, billing, and labor-cost reporting are expected to use Turkish lira amounts. A practical system lets Turkish-speaking staff submit time without translation work and lets finance review rates, costs, and invoices in TL or ₺.

Employee time records and attendance data are personal data under Law No. 6698, known as KVKK. Processing needs a lawful purpose, employee notice, proportionality, retention only as needed, and appropriate data security. On April 29, 2026, the Turkish Data Protection Board said biometric attendance processing is generally disproportionate for timekeeping where less intrusive methods such as PIN, card, signature, paper sheets, or supervised manual entry can be used.

Free tool or managed workflow

A free one-off tool is enough when you need to total one worker's week, check a draft overtime figure, or prepare a small invoice from already-approved hours. It works best when the records are simple, the team is small, and someone already owns the source data. The risk starts when those totals need approvals, corrections, repeat reporting, or handoff to payroll every pay period.

A managed workflow fits teams that track time across projects, clients, and roles throughout the week. Everhour Time Tracking lets people use timers or manual entries against tasks and projects, then sends those hours into timesheets, reports, budgets, invoices, and payroll review. Admins can use approvals, reminders, locked periods, and timer rules so the final record is not rebuilt at month end.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Turkey require employers to document working time?

Yes. Turkey has domestic labor-law rules requiring employers to track and document employees' working time. This is a Turkish requirement, not the EU CJEU working-time-recording obligation. A useful record shows each workday, actual hours worked, breaks, weekly totals, and the approval trail used before payroll or billing.

Which weekly thresholds should a Turkey time record separate?

A Turkey time record should separate agreed scheduled hours, extra-hours work up to 45 hours, and overtime above 45 hours in a week. Extra-hours work carries a 25% premium when the agreed weekly schedule is below 45 hours. Overtime above 45 weekly hours is paid at the employee's hourly rate plus 50%.

Why do daily breaks matter in Turkey time tracking?

Breaks affect the defensibility of the daily record. Turkey sets minimum rest breaks of 15 minutes for work of 4 hours or less, 30 minutes for work over 4 and up to 7.5 hours, and 1 hour for work over 7.5 hours. A timesheet that hides breaks makes daily working time harder to review.

Can a Turkey employer use biometric attendance for timekeeping?

The Turkish Data Protection Board decided on April 29, 2026, that biometric data processing for attendance tracking generally fails proportionality when less intrusive options are available. Employers should use alternatives such as PIN, password card, RFID/NFC card, signature, paper attendance sheets, or supervised manual entry for ordinary timekeeping.

Should Turkish teams track time in Turkish lira?

Payroll, billing, and labor-cost reporting for Turkey should use Turkish lira amounts, commonly shown with TL or ₺. Time entries still record hours, but reports and invoices need local currency context when rates, costs, budgets, and billable amounts are reviewed by finance or shared with clients.

How does Everhour Time Tracking support Turkey-based teams?

Everhour Time Tracking captures task and project hours through live timers or manual entries, then feeds those hours into timesheets, reports, budgets, invoices, and payroll review. Teams can track inside supported tools such as Asana, ClickUp, Jira, Monday, Notion, Trello, GitHub, Linear, and Basecamp, or use Everhour standalone.

Use Everhour Time Tracking to capture project hours, approve timesheets, lock completed periods, and prepare payroll or billing records with less manual cleanup.
