Use this workflow when your team manages work in Linear issues and needs to review sprint cost after the work period closes. The practical output is a structured cost record: issue, project, assignee, tracked hours, internal cost rate, billable or non-billable status, and review period. That record gives engineering and finance a shared view of labor spend.

Linear is the work context for issues, projects, assignees, status, priority, labels, and cycles. Cost tracking adds the financial inputs around that context: hours actually worked, person-level rates, and work status for billing analysis. A useful review answers which work consumed the most labor, which people contributed time, and which entries belong in internal cost analysis.

Build the sprint cost record

Start with the Linear issue as the unit of work. Each issue belongs to a team and has a title and status, with optional assignee, priority, estimate, cycle, label, and project. Add time entries against the issue, then apply the correct internal cost rate for the person who did the work. The cost record should keep the issue identity intact.

Keep cost rate and billable rate separate. Cost rate represents internal employee or contractor expense. Billable rate represents the client charge when the work is billable. A sprint cost review can include cost and billing fields, but those fields answer different questions. Mixing them makes internal spend look like revenue or client price.

Separate estimates from dollars

Estimates on Linear issues are effort or size values, not clock time. Teams can use Exponential, Fibonacci, Linear, or T-Shirt scales, with extended values available. Linear uses estimate values for completion and effort statistics, and unestimated issues default to 1 estimate point unless that setting changes. Cost tracking should use logged hours and rates for money.

The common mistake is assigning a fixed dollar value to one estimate point. That shortcut ignores who performed the work, how many hours they logged, and whether the work was billable or non-billable. Put estimate value, tracked hours, and cost in separate columns. The comparison then shows whether a sprint ran expensive because scope was large, execution took longer, or rate mix changed.

A one-off cost worksheet is enough for a closed sprint, a single leadership review, or a quick project check.
