A Hungary break calculation answers a practical timesheet question: after required breaks are removed, how many paid working hours remain for the day? For an adult employee, scheduled daily working time plus qualifying extraordinary working time triggers a 20-minute work break when it exceeds six hours. Daily working time above nine hours requires an additional 25 minutes, so the statutory minimum becomes 45 minutes for that day.
Hungary's Labour Code treats work breaks as non-working hours except for stand-by work. That means the usual adult calculation subtracts the break from worked-hour totals before pay, payroll review, or billing analysis. The country's wider schedule context also matters: general full-time employment is based on an eight-hour workday, typically spread across five Monday-to-Friday workdays.
Use this formula for an adult non-stand-by shift: scheduled time minus unpaid work break equals paid working time. Then multiply paid working time by the hourly rate for straight-time gross pay before taxes, deductions, premiums, extraordinary work rules, collective agreement terms, or contract exceptions. The break deduction changes the paid-hour total, so a 45-minute break becomes 0.75 hours.
For example, an adult employee in Hungary works from 08:00 to 18:00 at Ft 3,200 per hour. The 10-hour day exceeds nine hours, so the statutory minimum adult break is 45 minutes. Paid working time is 10 hours minus 0.75 hours, or 9.25 hours. Straight-time gross pay is 9.25 hours times Ft 3,200, or Ft 29,600.
The most common mistake is subtracting a lunch block without checking the Hungarian threshold that produced it. An adult shift over six hours needs 20 minutes. A day over nine hours needs 45 minutes total. The break must interrupt work and be scheduled after at least three and no more than six hours of work. If the break is split, the installment inside that window must be at least 20 minutes.
Worker category changes the answer. Young employees have stricter break rules: at least 30 minutes when daily working time exceeds 4.5 hours and at least 45 minutes when it exceeds six hours. Hungary also uses 24-hour time patterns such as 08:00 and 18:00, and Hungarian short date formats commonly use year-month-day order, so timesheet entries should avoid AM/PM ambiguity.
A one-off calculator is enough for a single shift, a corrected timesheet line, or a quick check before sending hours to payroll. It gives a fast paid-hour total when the worker category, start time, end time, and unpaid break length are already clear. It does not prove that the break was placed correctly or that daily and weekly rest rules were followed across the schedule.
A managed workflow matters when teams repeat this calculation every week. Hungary's schedule context includes a 12-hour daily and 48-hour weekly scheduled working-time ceiling, plus at least 11 consecutive hours of daily rest in the standard case. Everhour can embed tracking controls inside supported project tools and keep synced task metadata connected to timesheets, budgets, and approval review.

The adult break rule applies when scheduled daily working time plus qualifying extraordinary working time exceeds six hours. Exactly six hours does not trigger the 20-minute adult threshold under the stated rule. Once the day goes beyond six hours, provide at least 20 minutes, subject to the Labour Code's scheduling window.
Under Hungary's Labour Code, work breaks are non-working hours except for stand-by work. For ordinary adult shifts, subtract the break from worked-hour totals before calculating paid hours. Stand-by work is the key exception, so classify the shift correctly before treating a break as unpaid.
A 10-hour adult shift exceeds nine hours, so the statutory minimum work break is 45 minutes. That total comes from the first 20-minute break after more than six hours and the additional 25 minutes after more than nine hours. An agreement or collective agreement may set a work break up to 60 minutes.
The work break must interrupt work and be scheduled after at least three and no more than six hours of work. If the break is split into installments, the installment in that three-to-six-hour window must be at least 20 minutes. A break placed only at the end of the shift does not match that scheduling rule.
Young employees use stricter break thresholds in Hungary. They need at least a 30-minute break when daily working time exceeds 4.5 hours and at least a 45-minute break when it exceeds six hours. They also receive at least 12 hours of daily rest, so do not apply the adult break calculation to young workers.
